Gift Boosts Entrepreneurship

Burgess Gift

Michigan State University has announced a $4.5 million gift to the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the Eli Broad College of Business from alumnus Robert “Bob” K. Burgess, an accomplished business leader and longtime university advisor. Burgess also made a $2 million gift to the institute in 2005 which, in honor of his gift and service, will be renamed Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Summer Happenings

Summer Interns

Broad students spread out across the country for summer internships at some of the world’s largest and most reputable companies. Mirroring the diversity of Broad’s student body, companies at which they interned ranged from Detroit’s Big Three to global financial consulting firms, food manufacturing conglomerates to sports marketing agencies. For a snapshot of our students on location in their summer jobs, visit our intern page.

An Olympic Summer

Broad’s global impact was no clearer than during the Olympic Games. Full-Time MBA student Mohamed Hrezi represented Libya in the Olympic marathon.  Broad’s summer study abroad program, “Business of the Olympics: Olympic Venues Explored” took students to Sydney Olympic Park, host to the 2000 Games, to explore the business and economic implications of host cities. Finally, and for the gold, Broad alum Emily Regan won gold with the women’s eight rowing team.

Michigan State University recently announced that it would pilot a joint MD/MBA program beginning in the fall, combining programs from MSU’s College of Human Medicine and Broad.

Grandparents University

Staff and faculty from the Broad College ran business oriented classes during Grandparents University that focused on building entrepreneurship at a young age, understanding global thinking, money saving, and even the business of hospitality.

Fall Notables

C-Suite Speaker Series

Once again, the Broad College of Business is bringing to the classroom alumni who are business leaders for a lecture series that focuses on developing the next generation of business minds into leaders who make an impact.

This year’s Sylvan T. Warrington Lecture in Ethics and Leadership is part of the series and will feature Kim Popovits (BA Business ’80), chairman, president, and CEO of Genomic Health, Inc. The October 27 lecture will highlight how innovation and leadership helped Genomic Health to personalize medicine despite tremendous barriers and change the face of healthcare today. The Warrington Lecture is open to all faculty, students, alumni, and friends.
